If you’re looking to try ice skating around Philadelphia with the family this year, I’ve rounded up a great list of options and tips for success when skating with little ones. Being cooped up inside can drive everyone a little nuts in the winter, and ice skating is a great way to get out of the house and do something active.

Things to Consider When Ice Skating Around Philadelphia with Kids

  1. Go during a quieter time of day. A large crowd can be overwhelming and unsafe for a young beginner. Go during a quieter time so that you have more room and won’t need to worry as much about collisions.
  2. Check in advance for rental sizes. Proper fitting skates are essential for success. Check online or call in advance to make sure they carry kids sizes if you plan to rent skates.
  3. Consider a lesson. If you’re an experienced skater yourself, you might be able to coach your own child. If not, lessons that are designed for kids and beginners are a good way to help your child learn better and avoid frustration.
  4. Dress warm and comfortably. Thick, high socks will help keep toes warm and comfy in skates, while some stretchy layers (instead of stiff jeans) will help kids move a little easier.
  5. Teach safety. Skating, like all other winter sports, is really fun but relies on everyone following safety guidelines to avoid accidents and injuries. Be sure to skate with the direction of the crowd, practice how to fall safely, and wear a helmet to protect that noggin.
  6. Pack your patience. Parents, you already know this, but trying something new with kids sometimes requires a few more deep breaths. Be prepared for extra breaks (with hot cocoa!) and know that you might not spend a ton of time actually skating, but practice makes perfect.
