How to prepare for a studio maternity photography session
Select wardrobe for your studio maternity photography session
This is something that is so specific to your particular tastes and preferences. Most of my studio maternity sessions have at least 2-3 outfit changes – it’s definitely one of the perks of opting for a session in the studio! I encourage my clients to think about what makes them feel beautiful, and choose looks that are distinct and different. For example, many of my clients choose jeans and a button down, a dress, and a bra/underwear set with a robe.
My clients have access to over 325 dresses as part of their session with Veronika Paluch Photography; everything from oversized white dress shirts to sheer lace robes, so that there is nothing to prepare or buy. Simply show up and everything is done for you!
Line up a hair and makeup artist
This is a personal preference, but what I will say is this – there is an art to professionally done makeup. If having your makeup and hair tended to for your portraits, consider treating yourself for your session. Consider if it makes more sense to travel to a makeup artist’s studio or to have them travel to you. As always, do a lot of research on social media and reviews to ensure that the style of makeup is what you’re looking for.
My clients have access to an amazing in-house hair and makeup artist for all of their sessions. Come to the studio to be pampered ahead of your session – no need to travel to a salon or worry about timing if you’re leaving from your home…everything is here ready for you.
Consider what accessories you’d like to use
One of the best parts of a studio maternity photography session is that you have the opportunity for lots of looks and outfits – and it can be really fun to add accessories to your outfits! Some clients bring a sentimental item, like a veil from their wedding or ultrasound portraits, or maybe their getting ready robe from their wedding.
Fun jewelry, like statement earrings or simple gold chains, can also add to the look and personalize your portraits.
Book services that enhance your session experience
One classic maternity session pose is having your hands on your belly – the reason that we’re all there, right? Consider a manicure before the session, and either no polish or a neutral color. This can help make hands look longer and keep attention on your belly. Some clients consider waxing services if they’re doing nude or more intimate maternity portraits.
Pro tip: if you’re not a naturally tan person, please consider avoiding a spray tan ahead of the session. This can translate to orange undertones in your portraits.
