Studio maternity photos: everything you need to know about in-studio maternity sessions

There are so many reasons to opt for studio maternity photos – from control over the light and weather (and temperature, if you’re in an area where it’s super hot or cold!) to wardrobe changes to having a bathroom nearby, it’s easy to see why many families opt for the studio for their session. I’ve shared a few of the top reasons why families opt for studio maternity photos; keep reading to see ’em all!

Studio maternity photos offer tons of variety in outfits and backdrops

I think there’s a common misconception that studio maternity photos need to be well, boring. Maybe that you won’t get a lot of variety in your images, or that your gallery will be somehow smaller because you’re not outside. And while I get that, it’s so far from the truth!

Depending on the kind of studio that you’re in (photographers all have very different types of studios…some feel more like houses and others are similar to what might pop into your brain when you hear photo studio). For example, my studio has everything from a variety of fine-art hand painted canvas backdrops to couches to lounges to a bedroom.

One of the best things about studio maternity photos is that clients can change outfits multiple times without worrying about where they’re going to change, like they might for a photo session outside. In fact, many clients change their outfits 2-3 times for their studio maternity session!

Studio maternity photos can take place at any time of day

There is always some variability in this answer depending on your photographer, but most photographers will agree that one of the prettiest times of day to photograph a maternity session outdoors is “golden hour”. This happens at two times of day – around sunset and sunrise. Most people opt for their outdoor session at sunset because sunrise can be super early. Of course, photo sessions can take place at other times throughout the day but that soft golden glow is best 1-2 hours before sunset.

While that might not be an issue for some families, for others it can be very difficult to plan around this golden hour timing. Whether it’s due to toddler sleep schedules or work schedules, studio maternity photos can make more sense just due to scheduling issues.

Studio maternity photos allow for intimate maternity portraits

Many clients come book their maternity portraits with me because they love intimate maternity portraits; think bare bump, maybe a light robe, maybe nothing! Try doing that outside, y’all. While sure, it’s possible, you’re going to need to find an incredibly private place to avoid onlookers or some very confused park visitors.

Studio maternity photos are ideal for clients looking for those beautiful bare bump portraits!

Studio maternity photos can take place in any weather or temperature

Many clients choose the studio as a location for their maternity session solely because they don’t want to worry about rescheduling due to weather, or a too cold/too hot day. Pennsylvania’s weather is variable at best and sometimes we’ll have a 40 degree day following a 65 degree day. For clients who have inflexible schedules and don’t want to worry about a rain date due to the weather, it can be nice to have an indoor plan no matter what mother nature decides to throw at us!
