Did any other dog owners spend a lot of time thinking about how their pup would interact with their baby once baby arrived?
We had three dogs before our first kid was born – a Pekingese, Shih Tzu, and Pomeranian, all breeds who aren’t known to be exceptionally friendly or easygoing – and I was so curious as how they’d take to Everett once we brought him home. They were extremely attached to me (Henry would sit on my shoulder like a parrot any time he could find the opportunity, Louis had been with me for 13 years) and I could see them feeling threatened by a baby. But what did they do when Everett came home? Hid.
Hid from him.
Wanted nothing to do with him.
Not even slightly curious.
Once Everett was a bit older – maybe 18 months? – Henry decided that having Everett around was beneficial because he got to enjoy all the scraps of food that made their way to the floor, and would allow Evie to push him around in a shopping cart and sit with him in a chair at a little picnic table we had outside.
Spanky (SPANKY. THIS AMAZING DOG HAS THE MOST AMAZING NAME) was a doll with baby John. He certainly loved the attention and happily sniffed John for a treat.
