Sibling portraits – especially when toddlers are involved – are part art, part science.
I mean, toddlers as a WHOLE are something else. Once, when Everett was about three, he decided that he actually didn’t want me to remove his cantaloupe from the rind and had me reattach it with corn cob holders 😮💨
As photographers, those sibling pictures are at the tippy-top of our list of portraits for families. I know that the portraits of my own kids together are some of my favorites and I *always* make sure families leave with a beautiful sibling portrait. If you find toddlers challenging, try these these tips:
1. When the family walks in, make that toddler the focus of your attention and don’t worry about the baby. Putting on my ex-teacher hat here – kids in this age range are in the preoperational stage and their thinking is very self centered. Praise them. Ask them questions. Compliment them.
2. Talk about what you’re going to do before you do it. I literally say this! “Hey bud, I want to talk about what we’re going to do before we do it. Now is the time for pictures with baby. Would you like to show me how strong you are when you hold them?”. I walk them through what to do with their hands, what to do if they’re all done, and will use a puppet or doll to model.
3. Make a game out of it. Have them smell the baby’s hair – what does it smell like? Where’s baby’s nose? Can you moo like a cow for baby?
