The days are getting warmer, the birds are chirping, and the flower buds are starting to pop up… spring is here! If you’re looking for the best blooms in the area, I’ve got a list of 6 of the best spots for spring photos near Philadelphia that you can try.

Table of Contents

I love this time of year and the extra pep in my step it brings, especially after the dreary winter season. It’s an underrated time of year for family portraits, too. But first, some tips for choosing the best spots for spring photos near Philadelphia.

One of the tough things about spring is timing can be tricky; if you’re too early, a lot of the trees are still bare, but if you wait too long, you’ll miss the beautiful peak blooms. Mid-April through early May is your best bet for flowering trees like cherry blossoms, but let me also assure you that photos can be just as beautiful with petals sprinkled all over the ground if you miss the peak.

Since spring is also a generally wet season, grassy areas tend to be muddy. Think about finding a pretty walkway area or a bench, or plan to at least bring a blanket if you’ll want to sit for any photos.

Lastly, think carefully about what you’ll wear so that it coordinates but still stands out a bit from the backdrop. It is spring, after all, so opting for muted pastels and soft neutrals is a safe bet. I recommend bringing some layers that can be added in or taken off, since a cold kiddo will not want to cooperate for photos!

Best Spots for Spring Photos Near Philadelphia
Rittenhouse Square
Of course, I need to mention Rittenhouse Square as it’s such a great, family-friendly space in the city, with flowers blooming during the spring, a fountain, stone railings, and other great visual details. It can get crowded, so visiting in the morning is ideal for avoiding too many people as well as getting the best light for photos.

Fairmount Park
There are two great spots in Fairmount Park for spring blooms: the Azalea Garden and the Centennial District. There is plenty of green space to lay out a blanket or find a bench in the Azalea Garden for your photos. For gorgeous cherry blossoms, head to the area behind Memorial Hall for a cherry grove that stretches along Lansdowne Drive.

Magnolia Garden in Independence National Park
If you’re near Old City, the Magnolia Garden at Independence National Park is small but gorgeous, with wrought iron fences, benches, and walkways providing plenty of spots to pose. The main attraction during the spring months, though, is the collection of 13 magnolia trees surrounding the perimeter that bloom starting in mid-April.

Morris Arboretum
Tickets are required to visit Morris Arboretum, but it’s worth it for the gorgeous backdrop you’ll have in your photos. There are tons of flowers blooming throughout the spring, and plenty of spots that are great for photos. Plan to stay for a bit and walk around just to enjoy the beauty.

Pastorius Park
Not far from Morris Arboretum, this lovely park in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood is full of a variety of flowering trees and shrubs, so you’re likely to enjoy some blossoms no matter what part of Spring you visit. There’s also a pond that is a fan favorite, especially if you have a little one that enjoys checking out turtles and frogs.
Historic Yellow Springs – Chester Springs
The last on our list of best spots for spring photos near Philadelphia is a bit of a drive outside the city, but it’s full of charming architecture, outdoor seating areas, and, of course, plenty of greenery and flowers during springtime. The hardest part will be deciding where to take your photos (popular favorites are the area outside the Washington Building, and the East and West Meadows).
