Maternity photography plays second fiddle to a newborn session, but I’m gonna share with you why I think it’s so important to schedule a maternity session, too.
So, should you schedule a maternity session? Lemme share a couple of reasons why I think it’s so important to consider one.
- Maternity photography is a great way to photograph your family before the monumental change that a new baby will bring. As prepared as you think you might be for your baby to arrive, from the diapers distributed around the house to the clothes hung neatly in the closet, there’s just so much that a new baby brings that you can’t plan for. Maternity photography is a wonderful way to photograph you and your parter together before you’re a family of three, or with your child(dren) before a new sibling is added.
- You’ll get to know your newborn photographer and get a practice run for your newborn session. Many wedding photographers recommend scheduling an engagement session before the wedding so that you get some practice in front of the camera and get to know your photographer. Same goes for maternity photography! Not only is a great way to get comfortable in front of the camera (and don’t worry – if you want it, I will literally tell you what to do with your hands/face/EVERYTHING 😂) but you’ll get to know your photographer and be more comfortable for your newborn session.
- Maternity photography is a great way to document your journey into parenthood. I’ll be completely honest and say that I really, really struggled with my changing body when I was pregnant with my first kid. As someone who was really active – generally in life as a busybody but also with exercise – pregnancy hit me like a ton of bricks and if I wasn’t thinking about laying on the couch as I drug myself through the day, I was actually laying on the couch and sleeping. I just didn’t feel my best and didn’t love having my picture taken. Unfortunately, that left me with only a handful of iPhone photos of my body carrying my precious baby, and literally one halfway decent picture with my husband. That’s it. And that’s something that I’ll never be able to get back. By offering wardrobe styling for all of my clients and working with a hair and makeup artist, along with simple and modern locations and posing, those stressors are taken care of.

Hair and makeup are also available for clients at my Main Line photography studio space so that you’re ready for your maternity session.
