One of the particularly cool things about being a newborn photographer is getting to see family dynamics in the place where families are together most: home!
When chatting with families about their newborn session and what location makes the most sense for them – studio or in their home – sometimes the deciding factor is how special their home is to them. Is it their forever home? Did they put a lot of work into decorating and want to memorialize it in their portraits? Is the nursery important to them? If that’s not the case, that is completely fine (I’ll be the first person to admit that my second child didn’t even have a FLOOR in her nursery until about five weeks before she was born, if that gives you a sense of what her nursery looked like), but if your home is a special place for your family, an in-home newborn session is a wonderful idea. I sometimes find that toddlers feel more at home in a space that they’re familiar with, particularly if they’re a little shy or on the younger side. If you have pets that you’d like to include in your portraits, that’s also something to consider! Pets are always welcome for newborn sessions – I’m a huge sucker for pups cuddled up with their new sibling.
