Have you ever wondered what the best age is for newborn portraits?
If you Google “best time for newborn pictures” you’ll find lots of answers, and most of them will tell you that the baby should be able 5-10 days old.
I’m gonna tell you a secret.
It is completely fine to wait.
Getting out of the house with a baby that is 5 to 10 days old can be an impossible ask. When I was recovering from a c-section, I as still in the hospital 5 days after birth and wasn’t able to sit up for two weeks. If you’re looking for very posed newborns, there are some benefits to doing portraits sooner rather than later, but even for posed portraits like you see below – those are completely possible when your baby is even four weeks old!
When parents ask me when we should plan to schedule their session, I tell them that I have a very long-winded answer to this, but the short of it is that I want them to be rested and semi-settled into their new routine because I want them to enjoy the session and not feel pressure to leave the house before they’re ready. Your baby will be perfect at 7 days old…and 2 weeks old, and 4 weeks old. Please give yourself some grace when it comes to what can be accomplished after bringing home baby and know that whatever the age, we’ll get beautiful portraits.
