Looking for a place to buy maternity clothes in Philadelphia? It can be tough considering there are a limited number of brands that carry maternity options and even fewer that have shopping available in person! Not to mention, finding good maternity clothing is just challenging in general. You may be unsure how to style your growing bump and struggling to find clothes that are comfortable. And while your body is doing amazing work growing another human, a lot of women feel a bit self-conscious about their size, especially towards the end of pregnancy.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, I’ve gathered some general advice for how to approach building a maternity wardrobe below, as well as some recommended spots to shop for maternity clothes in Philadelphia and the surrounding area.
Table of Contents
Invest in some good basics
You likely don’t want to spend a ton of money on clothes that you’ll only wear for several months, but it is worth it to invest in a few key pieces during this time. This includes a good pair of leggings, jeans (or shorts for summer), and some basic tees. A black dress that can be dressed up or down is another item to consider. With these pieces, you can add jewelry, cardigans, or other accessories to build different outfits.
Comfort is king
Pregnancy is uncomfortable in general, so finding clothes that you actually feel comfortable in is key. If the waistband on a pair of pants feels a bit snug when trying on, you will probably be dying to take them off if you buy them and wear them more than an hour. Be sure to find pieces with plenty of stretch to them so you can wear them up until the end of your pregnancy and embrace the cute lounge styles that are popular right now!
Wear what makes you feel good
As I said before, pregnancy is a time when many women are not feeling their most confident in terms of appearance. If you’re the type of person who doesn’t shop too often for clothes and only buys classic pieces (nothing wrong with that!), then you could look at this as a time to buy a couple of fun, trendy items that help boost your mood a bit.
Try loose-fitting non-maternity clothes
For pants, you will probably need true maternity items. However, for tops, jackets, and dresses you can get away with some non-maternity pieces depending on the cut and style. Look for loose, flowy tops like oversized boyfriend tees or tunic length tops with some stretch to them. Dresses can be really versatile too if you find a babydoll, swing dress, or empire waist.
Places to Shop for Maternity Clothes in Philadelphia
While fewer brands are carrying maternity items in stores these days, here are some spots that you can check out for maternity clothes in Philadelphia and the surrounding area.
Located in Northwest Philly, The Nesting House is a consignment store that sells maternity clothing in addition to children’s clothing, toys, gear, and more! Buying gently used maternity clothes is a great way to save some money and help the environment.
Addison Bay is a brand (founded in Philly!) that focuses on elevated, fashion-forward activewear. They have a small collection of maternity items, but a lot of their other pieces are maternity-friendly. You can shop online, at their location in Ardmore, or in Avalon during the summer season.
A lot of moms recommend H&M MAMA for affordable and cute options. You can check out one of their several stores in the area, but their widest selection of maternity items are found online.
Target – of course! Is there anything they don’t have? Most stores have a small section for maternity clothes and nursing bras, and you can shop more extensively online as well. It’s a great option to stock up on inexpensive basics.
Seraphine doesn’t have any locations in the area, but it’s worth mentioning the celeb-favorite brand because they have a great selection of fairly affordable, cute options if you’re looking for something a little special beyond the basics. Plus, they offer a lot of maternity to nursing transition pieces to help you get more wear out of the clothes.
