Tips for Picking Outfits for Fall Family Photos
Start with One Outfit
It might be overwhelming at first to pick a slew of outfits. I like to recommend starting with mom’s outfit. Pick something that you feel great in! A great maxi dress is always flattering, or if you’re more of a jeans and sweater gal, that’s great too. Once you’ve got your outfit picked out, you can coordinate everyone else based on that.
Stick With a Color Palette
The fall season gives us such amazing, earthy tones. Feel free to lean into this by wearing rich, yet somewhat muted colors like burgundy, copper, sage green, mustard, etc. Classics like warm, creamy off-whites and navy are also great in front of a fall backdrop. Avoid bright neon colors or anything too pastel that screams spring or summer. The best thing is to pick one or two more saturated colors in total, then keep everything else neutral.
Think About Textures
Fall textures are just yummy – think chunky knits, corduroy, and leather. They’re a great way to add some subtle variety to your outfits without going overboard on colors. They’re easy on the eye without being boring.
Coordinate, Don’t Match
Putting everyone in jeans and a white shirt is fine, but I encourage you to explore other options! Instead, put one or two people in jeans, another in a dress, and another in chinos. If one person is wearing a pattern, use that piece as a guide to choose colors for everyone else. Everyone will look like they go together without looking like you’re in a uniform.
Layers are Your Friend
Layers look great, and help your outfit feel a bit more polished. Plus, the temperature can easily be mild or freezing during the fall, so have some layers ready like sweaters and vests. Bulky jackets don’t look great, and everyone will be more comfortable for photos if they’re warm enough. Trust me, your little ones will be muuuuch happier for photos if they’re not cold!
