Your baby is growing up and you’re wondering when to schedule a milestone session with a New Jersey newborn photographer, but aren’t exactly sure what’s the best age – never fear, I’m here to share my favorite age for photographing babies during their first year of life.

Milestone sessions are generally broken down into 4 ages: 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, and 12 months.
While I’d argue that milestone sessions at each of those ages are important, you certainly don’t need to schedule your session with a New Jersey newborn photographer at each. They’re called “milestone sessions” because babies reach different milestones at each age. At three months babies are pushing up on their arms (like what you’d see at tummy time), at six/seven months they’re sitting up, at nine months they’re crawling, and at twelve months they’re walking. There is variability on all of these times, of course. This is just a general guideline as to when most parents opt for their milestone session depending on what stage is particularly important to them!
What’s the most popular age for milestone sessions with a New Jersey newborn photographer?
Many parents opt for twelve month milestone sessions. Clearly, this is an important time in baby’s life – and yours! You made it twelve months with your little one, and that is certainly something to celebrate. Many parents choose to bring a small cake for a celebration at the end of their session, and it’s a great time to photograph your baby if they’re just starting to walk. Not only is a great time to photograph baby right before an important birthday, but it’s also the perfect time for updated family portraits.
But Veronika, what’s your favorite age to photograph babies?!
While I love photographing babies at every age (I mean, I am a New Jersey newborn photographer, for pete’s sake!), I really love photographing babies around six to seven months. To me, this is the time where their personalities really start to develop and they love interacting with me and their parents. Stranger-danger hasn’t set in just yet (just look at this smile!), and they are happy to be in a new place exploring and playing. They still have all of the features of a baby that makes them so cute – like chubby cheeks and roly poly legs – but have emerging characteristics of a real kiddo that make them so fun to play with!
Riddle me this: What if I schedule a milestone session with a New Jersey newborn photographer, and my baby isn’t sitting by then?
Flexibility is really key with milestone sessions; some parents aren’t particularly tied to a skill, and more so the age of the baby. Some really want to have the session when baby is sitting, or when they can officially scuttle across the floor. I’ve had families opt to push their session back, and that’s completely fine with me.
What else should I know about scheduling a milestone session?
Like newborn sessions, milestone sessions are something that you’ll want to schedule with plenty of time in advance to guarantee availability with your photographer. Most of my clients reserve their newborn sessions at least three months in advance, particularly if they’re hoping for a Friday spot on the calendar.
