Tell an expecting parent that their pregnancy will go by in the blink of an eye, and watch them roll their eyes (been there – and both of my babies were late). However, pregnancy is one of those times that falls under the ol’ “the days are long but the years are short” adage. Those 40 weeks – or in my case, 42 – seem to drag on, but then your kid is 5 years old and you can barely remember your pregnancy.
I’m here to tell you that maternity sessions are a great way to celebrate and remember your pregnancy, and offer up some tips and questions for booking a maternity photographer in New Jersey.
When should I book a maternity photographer in New Jersey?
Ideally, you should book with a maternity photographer in New Jersey early in your second trimester. You will want to schedule your maternity session around the 7th or 8th month of pregnancy, when you are flaunting a beautiful, round bump! Booking early ensures that your photographer has availability around that time. It may seem so far away when you are barely showing yet, but believe it or not, the months do go by quickly.
Do you offer any special packages for booking maternity and newborn sessions together?
Some photographers will offer special pricing for booking a maternity and newborn session. Chances are you will want to capture both of these fleeting moments, so it is a question definitely worth asking your maternity photographer.
I am happy to offer s
Do you offer a Client Closet or styling services?
The right clothing and styling for a session are important! When you feel comfortable and confident, it puts you at ease in front of the camera and helps your photographer better capture the joy of this special time.
I know that this can be somewhat stressful (and expensive!) to coordinate, which is why I offer a complimentary client closet full of gorgeous, size-inclusive dresses and sweet outfits for children. I will help you find the perfect outfit for your session, so you have one less thing to worry about.
Additionally, if you’re interested in hair and makeup services, I work closely with a fantastic makeup artist, Gina, who travels to you or my studio.
Do you have a studio option available if weather isn’t cooperating, or if my session is in the middle of winter?
As much as we all love a gorgeous, golden hour session outdoors, sometimes the weather isn’t on our side. Your due date may be in the middle of winter, when freezing temperatures make it impossible to be outside comfortably, or the forecast may be calling for a stretch of thunderstorms during the summer. You may opt for an in-home session from the start anyways, but having a studio option available means you can pivot to an indoor session if needed and still have beautiful photos (and not worry about cleaning your house ahead of time).
My studio is located in Paoli, PA (about 35 minutes west of Philadelphia) and has plenty of space for your session. Its light-filled, neutral rooms are a perfect backdrop to your photos, and I also have a space for you and your family to relax and play, have some snacks, or have your makeup done. The client closet is also located at my studio, and it’s where we will meet for your complimentary wardrobe appointment.
Will you guide me with posing?
You are not expected to be a professional model when you book your session with a maternity photographer in New Jersey. Especially while expecting, it’s normal feel unsure how to position your body or know what to do with your hands so that you look natural but photogenic. A good photographer should guide you through all of the different poses and make you feel comfortable in front of the camera.
What is included when booking a session?
This is an important question to ask up front so that you have a clear understanding of what you’ll receive from your photographer. They may have different package options, and therefore varying prices. Things like how many images you’ll receive, whether they’ll be digital or print or both, and what kind of turnaround time to expect are all questions they should be able to answer.
