1. You have a pet that you’d like to include in your newborn portraits
Hands down, this is the number one reason why families start their “in home newborn photography near me” search journey. And I completely understand – we have three dogs who are like our third, fourth, and fifth children. Much to my husband’s chagrin, they are in all of our holiday family portraits (even if it’s just for five minutes) and absolutely a part of our family.
Having your pet at home for newborn portraits allows for those super sweet newborn and pup pictures, and also gives your dog(s) a place to decompress between pictures. Having them leave the house for the newborn session can be stressful on top of an already new and changing family dynamic.
2. You’ve put a lot of work into your nursery and want to show it off
Putting together my son’s nursery kept me sane throughout the nine gosh darn longest months of my life. I poured over Pinterest (and y’all this is when Pinterest was ROUGH…let me tell you) and spent so much time collecting and refining his book collection, sourcing the perfect vintage artwork, finding brightly colored wooden toys, you name it. When we eventually moved our of the home that we brought him home to as a newborn, one of the hardest parts of leaving was knowing that we were leaving his nursery. I’m so glad I had photographed it to the high heavens.
If you’re in the same boat, an in-home newborn session might be a great option for you. Not only will you be able to have the nursery photographed as it inevitably changes.

It’s a concern for sure – while I find that newborns are surprisingly easy to travel with compared to, say, an 18 month old, many of parents wonder how they’ll feel leaving the house shortly after having their baby. It’s a valid concern! Birth is a wild ride and I’ve seen every end of the spectrum – moms who feel ready for their session 72 hours after baby is born to moms who want to wait four weeks for their session.
In home newborn photography is a great option for parents who have medically fragile babies, or are not feeling up for leaving the home after baby is born.
4. You have older children who you think might do better in their own space
While my studio is very often frequented by toddlers (there’s a toy cabinet and book shelf for Pete’s sake), sometimes families opt for the “in home newborn photography near me” route because of older siblings.
